Interesting programme of meetings for the book industry
Representatives of the industry at the WBF: booksellers, librarians and printers, can participate in many interesting meetings, debates and workshops organised together with the Polish Chamber of Books, the Polish Book Publishers Association, the National Library of Poland, the Book Institute, the Adam Mickiewicz Institute, and the Capital City of Warsaw. We especially recommend meetings on the broadly defined publishing market in Germany, France and China and on books for children and their role in shaping the reading habits. The WBF also has a separate section for literary agents – an important element of the publishing market.
The WBF Online Book Catalogue is a joint project by the Public Library of the City of Warsaw – the Main Library of the Mazovian Voivodship – and Murator EXPO, the executive organiser of the Warsaw Book Fair. Based on the database of the Polish publishing market ‘LibriKo’, the Catalogue is a tool containing easily searchable information about books released in previous years offered by our exhibitors. The Catalogue can be accessed online and in the Information Office directly at the Fair. It will help WBF visitors find specific publications among various stands.
Online Book Fair
The Warsaw Book Fair will be complemented by the Online Book Fair, scheduled for 15–28 May 2017, at etargi-ksiazki.waw.pl. Using a modern Internet platform, companies operating in the publishing and bookselling industry can present their offers just as at traditional book fairs. The online edition of the Fair makes it possible to browse through the exhibitors’ offers for all those who cannot participate in the traditional Fair and those who did not manage to contact their favourite exhibitors. The main strength of the Online Book Fair is that its lasts significantly longer and is much more accessible – every Internet user can visit it at any time, without any limitations and without the need to leave home. To make it easier to get around, we have divided the Online Book Fair into sectors and we have prepared an extensive thematic catalogue of offers.
Friday – The Day of Academic and Science Books – the 11th edition of ACADEMIA
The Science and Academic Book Fair ACADEMIA will be held in Warsaw for the 11th time, accompanying the Warsaw Book Fair at the National Stadium already for the fifth time. The event has been initiated by the university publishers Wydawnictwa Uniwersytetu Warszawskiego (University of Warsaw Press) and Oficyna Wydawnicza Politechniki Warszawskiej (Publishing House of the Warsaw University of Technology) and has been organised for several years on their behalf by Murator EXPO. Academic and science publishers will once again present their offers in the Business Club section. Each year, the ACADEMIA competition for the best academic and science book is an important event at the Warsaw Book Fair. The competition covers science books, academic textbooks, monographs, publishing series and translations. Apart from the Grand Prix and other awards, the participants can win the following prestigious awards: The Award of the Rector of the Warsaw University of Technology for the best academic publication in the field of technology and exact sciences and the Award of the Rector of the University of Warsaw for the best academic publication in the field of human and social sciences. This year’s edition of the competition is special: 56 publishers have entered over 130 books. The official meeting of academic and scientific publishers, combined with the announcement of the results of the ACADEMIA Competition 2017, will take place on Friday, 19 May, at 4 p.m., in the Amsterdam Hall of PGE Narodowy.
The stand of the Capital City of Warsaw (“Zaczytana Warszawa”) is mainly devoted to the Warsaw Literary Award, which is celebrating its 10th anniversary. Therefore, we have prepared an exhibition depicting the history of the Award, a presentation of books written by the past winners and nominees and meetings with authors, which are special highlights of the Fair this year.
Warsaw also sponsors another important literary award – the Ryszard Kapuściński Award for Literary Reportage; the Warsaw stand will feature books for which this award has been granted.
The stand of the Capital City of Warsaw will also include Warsaw's cultural institutions: The stand of the Capital City of Warsaw will also represent Warsaw's cultural institutions: Dom Spotkań z Historią, the Warsaw Rising Museum, the Museum of Modern Art, and the Museum of Warsaw, with a rich variety of publications related to the history of the city, as well as art and culture.
